How embracing my needs and desires helped me
For 15 years, I was deep in the corporate hustle, making sure I was doing everything right for everyone else, but at the cost of my well-being. My life seemed perfect on the outside - I was settled in Canada, successful in my career, enjoying new motherhood, all with a loving partner. I had just returned to work part-time after maternity leave, negotiating a great salary, and being promoted into a Director role at one of Canada’s largest renewable energy companies.But the truth was I was absolutely overwhelmed and exhausted, and had no idea what to do differently. Even though I didn't realize what I was experiencing was burnout, I knew I couldn't keep going.Amidst my feelings of confusion, anger, and shame, I decided to dive head (and heart) first into my personal development journey. I knew I had to make changes from within. I had done everything I was "supposed" to do, "supposed" to want, but somehow, was not embodying the person I wanted to be. And I was embarrassed for not being happy about where I was at.Within my journey, my transformation happened as I moved away from making decisions based on external validation and started embracing my internal alignment. As I was doing my work the loudest message that kept resonating was to embrace my needs and desires. But as a recovering people-pleaser, my own intentions were in my blind spot. I didn’t know how to find them, let alone embrace them.That’s where my methodology started to develop. I uncovered my next steps as I tuned into the wisdom of my emotions, was curious about the narratives running in my head, and designed my actions in a way that was accessible and provided relief – it was so empowering both professionally and personally! As I encountered challenges, I tuned into them to see what creative adjustments I could make. Before I knew it, I was forming new habits, finding creative solutions, and making decisions that felt right and aligned for my life.My path lead me to becoming a certified coach, finding alignment with a long lost dream of becoming a modern day philosopher. I absolutely love what I do, and I’m intentional about how I want it to fit within my personal life - from one moment to the next. Phase I of this program is centered around understanding what you don't want to experience and uncovering the visions, desires, and dreams that do resonate with you, even if it's in low resolution. We navigate to the aspirations that you've previously easily pushed aside as not valuable because it wasn't suggested by someone else. In this phase you give yourself permission to uncover and embrace what you want without having to self-negotiate.Phase II is about providing guidance and keeping you accountable as we find creative and accessible options to help you align the decisions you make to the vision you uncovered in Phase I. We look for new trailheads that aren't full of resistance and find the most accessible next step so you can take your space and make decisions in a way that feels true to you.

What do you want to experience? What is your current definition of success? These are some of the questions we answer.It's so hard to tune into your own needs and desires when you're running around doing everything you are supposed to do for your loved ones, your home, and your work. It becomes especially difficult as you approach burnout.This is your time and space to gain clarity on what you want to be experiencing in your life. This clarity becomes your beacon, your new story, as you update your default habits and decisions.

The key to preventing burnout is uncovering what you truly want to experience, not just what you are "supposed" to want, by slowing down and becoming aware of your autopilot thoughts. This is why the first phase is dedicated to understanding the vision you hold for your life and re-learning to recognize your intentions, from one moment to the next. For you to thrive, I provide support and guidance as you go from hustle-burnout programming to giving yourself permission to embrace your needs and desires, inclusive of all your specific and beautiful nuances.

This phase of the program is delivered over a period of 6 months. It is challenging to reprogram our default way of thinking and acting. 3x3 Framework
Th 3x3 framework is based on the premise that burnout happens as result of trying to keep up with other people's expectations at the expense of your own needs and desires. It's not just about doing too much, it's about doing too much that doesn't fill your cup. On the other hand, joy, energy, and fulfillment come as a result of embracing who you are and acting in alignment with your genuine intentions.We work using 3 pillars of your life experience:
1. your thoughts,
2. your actions, and
3. your feelings.And since any method's effectiveness depends on your state of mind, we customize the prompts and exercises to your 3 different states of being:
1. the aligned state,
2. the autopilot state, and
3. the conflicted state.Most of the work we do is centered around updating your habits of thought and action in the autopilot state. The more your autopilot thoughts and actions are aligned with who you are, the easier it is to get to the aligned state - a state of joy, energy, fulfilment, creativity and performance.

You're providing for your immediate family while trying to support your family of origin, you're spending long stressful hours at work doing everything you can for your boss and coworkers, you're showing up the best you can for all your social obligations, and you're trying to look good while doing it all.You’re “fine” but you’re anxious and frustrated. Do you stop? No, you keep going, coz you still can.This is what I call the Hustle-Burnout Cycle. You're go-go-go when you're in your autopilot mode, truly believing your worth is dependent on you exceeding other people's expectations. And then you might find you're only deserving to stop once you're overwhelmed, exhausted, or sick. But you quickly cycle back - as soon as you feel better - you're back to hustling, scrambling, running on fumes. From time to time you feel joy and light-hearted, but it's often left to chance and feels very fleeting.No wonder you keep feeling dissatisfied, I doubt this pattern aligns with the vision you hold for you life. You’re running on programming and habits that were instilled in you a long time ago. Ones that might have been successful at one point in your life, but are now leading you to exhaustion over and over again.This is where most of my clients start.

The 3 States of BeingLevel 1 (L1) - Aligned State is the state of joy, energy, fulfillment, creativity, and performance.
We update your experience of this state from one where you are preemptively limiting your joy to one where you embrace your flow and inspiration.Level 2 (L2) - Autopilot State is where we spend most of our time, going about our day.

The Autopilot State
From focused on "should do" to embracing your desires
Most of us spend most of our time here - we are designed this way. Depending on what we are busy doing in L2, the unconscious habits we have, we will find ourselves more often in L1 or L3.I guide you as you tune into and embrace your desires so you can learn how to bring those to the table, while understanding your fears and limiting beliefs. This is not about over-designing your life, but instead about tuning into the design specs that you already have in mind. This is also not about what you're "supposed" to want, but about what truly makes you smile. Venting is a great way to become intentional in L2.The more you run programming that aligns with what you want to experience in life, the more you will find relief and naturally raise into L1, preventing burnout and finding fulfillment along the way.

The Conflicted State
From being critical to embracing your needs
L3 happens when we have been in breach for too long. This is the state of overwhelm, exhaustion, and dissatisfaction. Once burnt out from hustling too long, the tendency in the Hustle-Burnout Matrix is to become very critical of ourself or of others.The work we do here is to reconnect with your needs, more often whispered by your intuition than familiar to your consciousness. Following that intuition helps provide some rejuvenation so you can get back to L2 or L1 and do the things you love.Unlike L1, which is an incredibly preforming state of being, everything is messy and difficult in L3 - so we avoid problem solving, and instead focus on R&R, which can take anywhere from a couple breaths to several days.

What is the difference between a coach and a therapist?
We are fortunate to have so many professions dedicated to our mental wellbeing. My favorite analogy is to compare a coach to a personal trainer, and a therapist to a doctor. If your ankle is broken, you will likely see a doctor and then a surgeon. But after the surgery, to strengthen the muscles around your ankle, you would work with a personal trainer. A coach is similar - helping you strengthen your mental muscles so you can achieve specific goals in your life.
Is the coaching investment covered?
This coaching program, Living in Alignment, can be covered by some Wellness or Professional Development benefits offered by employers given that it's focused on providing tools to prevent and recover from burnout. You can ask your manager for more details on your specific benefits plan. I am always happy to answer any questions you or your manager might have in regards to the Living in Alignment program.
What do you mean by holistic?
My approach creates space for your life - as a whole - so that we can address any area that needs your attention while we're working together.Merriam-Webster defines holistic as "relating to or concerned with wholes or with complete systems rather than with the analysis of, treatment of, or dissection into parts". This is your space to step back and take a look at your life as a whole.When working 1:1, I invite folks to consider how they feel about their career, relationships, health and finances. When leading a workshop, I invite folks to consider anything that is creating angst in their life at the moment of the workshop. The thing is that burnout tends to sneak up on you at anytime and anywhere, and once it does, you feel it's impact throughout your life. When you're exhausted at work, it's hard to be present at home - and when you're exhausted at home, it's hard to be at your best at work. The flip side is also true. Once you embrace your needs and desires in one area of your life, it tends to lift the cloud on other areas of your life too. When you're feeling fulfilled about your work, you can bring that extra hop in your step home. When you're energized by your home life, you can think clearly at work.
What do you mean by burnout?
In my practice, burnout is what happens after you've hustled too long, been too stressed about something that you're doing by default, without seeing if it aligns with you. You end up overwhelmed with what you have to do, exhausted at the thought of the simplest task, and dissatisfied because you've worked so hard but aren't enjoying the fruits of your labour in the way you expected to. Sometimes it's about reframing your experience, sometimes it's about changing your experience. But before making any changes, it's important to uncover what you do want - not only what you don't want so that you can take action accordingly.For reference, here are some additional descriptions of burnout that I find helpful:
CAMH defines burnout as: Burnout is a state of emotional, physical and mental exhaustion caused by excessive and prolonged stress. Burnout in the course of employment can make one feel emotionally drained and unable to function in the context of work and other aspects of life. Burnout can reduce productivity and can lower your motivation and cause you to feel helpless, hopeless and resentful.
Canada Life defines burnout as: If you’re emotionally exhausted or feel that you’re unappreciated and overwhelmed even though you continue to work hard, you may be approaching or in burnout. Though not considered a mental illness, burnout is a mental health issue. Burnout is more likely when you: Expect too much of yourself, Never feel your work is good enough, Feel inadequate or incompetent, Feel unappreciated, Have unreasonable demands either because you take them on or they’re placed on you, Are in a job that’s just not a good fit for you
Won't I just be selfish if I embrace my intentions?
I love this question. It's an opportunity for me to talk about the creativity that arises when you consider your intuition, your inner guidance, your inner wisdom that expresses itself through your needs and desires. By tuning into your inner voice, you can start bringing in a new flavour to your relationships, your work, your health, and other areas of your life. I like to think of the whispers of that inner voice as new data points, as design specs, that you can add to the other design specs that exist in your life. And yes, sometimes, there is conflicting interests - which is were the help of a professional coach really comes in handy. For most of my clients, the reality has been that discovering what they want to experience and then suggesting that to their loved ones & finding out what they want to focus on at work and suggesting that to their manager, has yielded wonderful results, acceptance, open communication, and routes to fulfillment and joy. There is often more freedom in our life than we realize.
